A nonprofit studio at McGuffey Art Center

Glass, as a way through.

We use the focus and warmth of the hot shop as a tool for therapy, training, and education — open to everyone in Charlottesville, no experience needed.

Our purpose

Working with molten glass asks for your whole attention. That turns out to be good medicine.

Charlottesville Glass exists to make the studio experience — the heat, the timing, the small steady wins at the bench — available as care, as training, and as open education. We meet people where they are and hand them something real to make.

What we do

Three ways in.

Therapeutic studio time

Guided sessions at the bench and the kiln for individuals and small groups, built around presence, safety, and confidence. Come as you are — we handle the fire.

Training for groups

Sessions and simple curricula for clinicians, recovery programs, schools, and workplaces that want to bring hands-on glasswork into their own practice.

Community education

Classes, demonstrations, and open days that make glassblowing, flamework, and kiln forming approachable for the whole community.

Why glass

The material does part of the work.

It sets the pace

Glass moves on its own schedule. You learn to work with it instead of forcing it — a lesson that tends to travel home with you.

It demands presence

You can’t check your phone at 2,000°F. For an hour, the work pulls you fully into the moment. Many people call that the point.

It rewards patience

Every finished piece is annealed — cooled slowly so it won’t crack. Taking the time to come back to yourself works about the same way.

It’s made with others

The hot shop runs on teamwork. You practice asking for help and giving it — quietly, hands busy, side by side.

Where we work

At home in the McGuffey Art Center.

We’re based at McGuffey, an artist-run cooperative that has been a home for Charlottesville makers since 1975. Our studio sits among working painters, potters, and printmakers — so every visit puts you inside a living creative community, not a clinic.

Support is on the way

We’re just getting started.

Charlottesville Glass is a newly forming nonprofit. We’re setting up our banking and a donor-advised fund now, and online donations will open here soon. Until then, the biggest help is spreading the word, volunteering, and telling us what you’d want from a community glass studio.
